The differences between power lithium batteries and energy storage batteries
① There are no significant differences in positive and negative electrode materials, electrolytes, and separators between energy storage batteries and new energy power lithium batteries. However, compared to power lithium batteries, energy storage batteries prioritize safety, cycle performance, and cost. They do not strictly require excellent rate performance and temperature performance. Therefore, the requirements for material indicators and battery material ratios of energy storage batteries are quite different from those of power lithium batteries.
② Power lithium batteries are mainly used in electric vehicles, electric bicycles, and other electric tools, while energy storage batteries are mainly applied in peak-load regulation and frequency modulation power auxiliary services, renewable energy grid connection, and microgrid fields. As a mobile power source, power lithium batteries have the requirement of achieving the highest possible volume energy density under the premise of ensuring safety, in order to achieve a more durable driving range. However, energy storage batteries do not have a direct requirement for energy density because most energy storage devices do not need to be moved.
③ In terms of cost, lithium-ion batteries for power applications face competition from traditional fuel-powered sources, while energy storage batteries have to contend with the cost competition of traditional peak-load and frequency regulation technologies. Moreover, the scale of energy storage stations is generally at the megawatt level or even above the gigawatt level. Therefore, the cost of energy storage batteries needs to be lower than that of lithium-ion batteries, and their safety requirements are also higher.
④ The energy storage battery management system is very similar to the power battery management system. However, the power battery system is installed in a high-speed moving electric vehicle, which has higher requirements for the power response speed and power characteristics of the battery, the accuracy of SOC estimation, and the number of state parameter calculations.The scale of the energy storage system is extremely large, and there are significant differences between the centralized battery management system and the energy storage battery management system.
⑤ Power lithium batteries are power sources that supply power to tools. They mostly refer to the batteries that provide power for electric vehicles, electric trains, electric bicycles, and golf carts. The key difference between them and the starting batteries used for starting car engines is that power lithium batteries are generally made of valve-sealed lead-acid batteries, open-tube lead-acid batteries, and lithium iron phosphate batteries.
It is precisely because there are numerous differences between power lithium batteries and energy storage batteries that developing dedicated cells for this application scenario will also become possible. As China's energy storage application industry enters the large-scale era, the production of energy storage batteries is like an arrow on a bow,ready to be launched. It is known that many battery companies in China are currently conducting research and development on energy storage cells, and the pace of energy storage application batteries is getting closer.
